Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My Filter has threads... What's the difference between regular and S.A.E. Threads?
A: As you can see in this graphic, when looking at a filter's threads from the side the difference is very obvious. Standard, sometimes called "MPT" or "Male Pipe" threads are smaller and have a higher number of threads than the S.A.E. style. The S.A.E. threads are large and are square in nature almost resembling a child's toy.

Q: I can't find my filter on the web site, what can I do?
A: Spa manufacturers change the way their spas are made constantly! This makes it impossible to list every manufacturer and every model. We have assembled the most complete listing of filters possible and we add to it constantly. But there are definitely some that are not listed. If you are unable to find your filter, just give us the dimensions of the filter that you have we'll find the replacement. We have access to replacement filters for every spa. You can find more information on measuring your filter on our how to measure a filter page.

Q: How often should I replace my filter?
A: This is a real open ended question. And it is one we hear more than any other. It can be compared to the question: "How often should I replace my shoes?". The answer is: "When you need to". So, the simple answer is: "when you filter needs to be replaced". This will vary from one spa to another based on the number of filters your spa has and their size. It also varies based on the amount the spa is used. You can filter clean water all year and and the filter won't get dirty. But, if you are like us, your spa probably gets used regularly and the water is made a little dirtier every time you get in. We bring dirt, hair and other pollutants with us every time we get in the spa. If the filter is doing it's job properly all of these things find there way to the filter where they are collected. The are not removed from the water until you remove them. This is why cleaning your filter is so important. But even cleaning only does so much. The tiny pores, (or holes), in the filter material eventually become clogged with debris that just won't wash out. So as time goes by, it becomes harder and harder for your pump to push water the filter. When this happens water begins to by-pass the filter completely. (See more about this by-pass system here). The larger or the more filters you have, the longer it will take to fill up the filter material. It's time to replace your filter when it is no longer possible to clean it properly.
Our Experience: We use our spa for about an hour every night. Our filter has 75 Square Feet of filter material. We always have two filters on hand and we rotate them monthly. The one that is pulled out of the spa is soaked in cleaning solution and then dried and put on a shelf until it's time to switch again. We find that we need to replace the older of the two filters about every 6 months. (This routine is something that we established long before selling replacement filters on the Internet).

Q: I just bought a used spa... Do I need to replace the filter?
A: YES! By all means replace that filter!!! When you think about the hair and body oils that the filter brought along with it I think you will understand why. It's kind of like bathing with someone you may not want to.  Yuk!

Q: Can I get a discount if I order more filters?
A: Unfortunately, our low prices do not allow enough margin for quantity discounts. We would need to raise our prices in order to offer such a program. It has been our experience that since most spas use one filter at a time most customers purchase one filter at a time. Therefore, we decided to offer the lowest possible price on filters individually.

New!
Watkins, (Hot Spring, Tiger River & Hot Spot), spa owners can now receive a savings by ordering multiple filters as a part of a package deal. We realized that some Watkins spas use up to 5 filters at a time! So we have packaged them to help save shipping for these filters. See our Watkins Special page in our on-line catalog for package deals. If you have a spa that uses 3 or more filters at a time let us know and we'll put together a special package for you!

Q: What if I order the wrong filter?
A: At Spa Filters Direct, we do our best to help you get the right filter for your spa the first time. However, sometimes an error does occur either in the description of a current filter or in the way a filter is measured or ordered. When an error occurs we will do everything in our power to make the order right. No matter who is to blame! See our returns page for more information.

Q: I'm a spa dealer, can I purchase filters and have them shipped directly to my customers?
A: Yes! When you place your order you have the ability to enter different "Bill To" and "Ship To" addresses. Filters will be sent to the "Ship To" address with only a Packing List that does not show pricing.

Q: I found my filter for less from another company... can you match their price?
A: Customers are invited to contact us with requests to match pricing from other suppliers. Only written or publicly posted prices for comparable quality spa filters will be reviewed and then possible matched.
